As the world marked Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, the voices of Trefoil Guild Nigeria resonated across various states of the federation as members of this arm of the Nigeria Girl Guides Association rolled out impactful activities aimed at raising awareness on menstrual hygiene and promoting healthy practices among girls and women.
In Edo State, members visited Victorious Family Assembly, Benin City, during an all-female conference where participants were sensitized on menstrual hygiene management and the importance of maintaining proper personal hygiene during menstruation. The team also proceeded to Springfield High School, New Benin Market, where students were educated on the importance of cleanliness and healthy menstrual practices.
In Ogun State, Trefoil Guild members engaged students of St. Peter's Catholic Private School, enlightening them on the facts and myths surrounding menstruation. The students were informed about the significance of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28. At Abeokuta Grammar School Junior, girls received education on building a healthy future through proper menstrual hygiene. Discussions covered menstrual cycles, myths and facts about menstruation, and a practical session on making bracelet beads using five red beads and twenty-three white beads to illustrate the menstrual cycle. An interactive session provided an opportunity for the girls to ask questions and gain clarity on menstrual health issues.
In Lagos State, members gathered at Unity Primary School, Awodiora Area, Ajegunle, Ajeromi Local Government Area, alongside pupils and students from various primary and secondary schools, teachers, Guiders, and Trefoil Guild members. Resource persons delivered educative talks on Menstrual Hygiene Management, emphasizing the importance of proper hygiene, dignity, and access to menstrual health information.
Similarly, the Down-Town Division of Trefoil Guild Rivers State lent its voice to the global campaign by calling on girls and young women to break the stigma surrounding menstruation, end the culture of shame, and work towards creating a period-friendly world where everyone feels safe, supported, and empowered. The event was complemented by a press release reinforcing the message of menstrual dignity and inclusion.
The hallmark of the various activities across the country was the message of advocacy and empowerment championed by the Country Chair of Trefoil Guild Nigeria, Mrs. Grace Frank Ojobo, who joined the international community in commemorating World Menstrual Hygiene Day. She emphasized the importance of menstrual health education, access to sanitary products, and the promotion of reusable sanitary pads, which Trefoil Guild Nigeria has continued to teach girls and women as a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for menstrual management.
